Project Overview

Client: Imielin City Council

Location: Imielin, Poland

Challenge: Design and implement a vacuum sewerage system to protect a reservoir supplying drinking water to millions, while addressing mining-damaged terrain.

Key Outcomes:

  • 60 km of vacuum lines and 1,000 vacuum valves installed.
  • Protection of the Dzie Kowice Reservoir.
  • Multi-phase implementation over 15 years.

Introduction

Imielin City Council in Poland faced the challenge of designing and implementing a vacuum sewerage system to protect the Dzie Kowice Reservoir, a critical water source supplying millions. The terrain was complicated by flat land and subsidence from coal mining, along with high groundwater levels.

The solution involved a 60 km vacuum system with 1,000 vacuum valves, operating with negative pressure to prevent leakage or overflow. The system’s advanced monitoring ensured efficient operation, while the shallow trench design minimized construction costs and disruption. The project successfully protected the reservoir, with a multi-phase implementation ensuring long-term environmental safety and infrastructure growth over 15 years.

Problem / Challenge

Imielin’s unique characteristics include:

  • Proximity to the Dzie Kowice Reservoir, a critical water source.
  • Flat terrain with significant subsidence due to coal mining.

Key issues:

  • High groundwater levels and difficult conditions.
  • Need for environmental safeguards around the reservoir.

Solution

Innovative Vacuum Sewerage System:

  1. Shallow trenches reduced construction costs and disruption.
  2. Negative pressure operation ensured zero leakage or overflow.
  3. Advanced monitoring system for efficient operations.

Implementation

Key Features:

  • Stable power and alarm systems for rapid issue detection.
  • Concrete vacuum pots to handle challenging terrain.

Community Impact:

  • Ensured long-term protection of a vital water source.
  • Seamless integration with the city’s expanding infrastructure.

Results

  1. Environmental Protection: No sewage leakage into the reservoir, safeguarding drinking water for millions.
    • Effective management of mining-damaged terrain.
  1. Reliability: Vacuum system exceeded expectations over 15 years.
  2. Sustainability: Commitment to future expansions as the city grows.
